The Declaration of Independence is the most important document in American history. During a year when presidential history could be made, this incredible document is making an exclusive one-day stop in Portland, one of only two West Coast cities on the Cricket Wireless Declaration’s 2008 tour.
This free event, from 10am to 5pm at the Rose Garden’s Lexus Club Level, will feature an opening ceremony with local celebrities, live entertainment throughout the day and commemorative t-shirts and posters for first 500 attendees. In addition, 30 pieces of artwork from the winners of the Art of Politics competition will be displayed in the rotunda. The event is co-presented by Wells Fargo Private Bank and Starbucks.
The original Declaration of Independence was handwritten, but after the Continental Congress approved it on July 4, 1776, the manuscript was typeset by Philadelphia printer John Dunlap. Riders then traveled through the colonies with roughly 200 copies, only 25 of which remain. The rare copy Cricket is bringing to Portland is the only such document that travels publicly.
Cricket Wireless is bringing the Declaration of Independence to the Rose Quarter as part of its affiliation with Declare Yourself, a national campaign to improve voter registration during this important election year.
